With a sea of immigration lawyers at your beck and call, finding a legal professional with an intimate knowledge of U.S. immigration law may be easier said than done.
Finding a qualified Immigration Attorney
U.S. immigration law is highly complex and some attorneys are better at it than others. Word of mouth is often the most effective means of finding a knowledgeable immigration lawyer with a proven track record of acquiring employment visas for their clients. A referral from a friend, family member, associate or colleague who is a satisfied client of an immigration lawyer is a good place to start.
In the absence of a qualified referral, visit the American Immigration Lawyers Association, a national association of over 11,000 attorneys and law professors who practice and teach immigration law.
Avoid the pitfalls of hiring a bad immigration lawyer
Not all immigration attorneys are created equal, as some are more successful than others. It’s recommended to engage more than one initial consultation with more than one immigration lawyer for much the same reason people seeking medical advice get more than one opinion – to ensure they’ve got the most qualified surgeon or doctor for the job.
Ask your immigration attorney if he / she is in good standing with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, check their references and call the Bar in the state (s) in which they practice to check for complaints or criminal activity.
Although you’ll find hundreds, if not thousands, of immigration attorneys listed in the Yellow Pages, it’s not the best place to look. Immigration attorneys who advertise in this channel may not give you the personalized attention you deserve.
